Dr. Bill Gordge
September’s Community Champion is Dr. Bill Gordge.
Dr. Gordge, a former pediatrician, took his love for hiking and the outdoors and created a wonderful service project.
With some friends, Dr. Gordge began the Pathfinders for Greeways, a group of individuals who clears pathways and hiking trails in the Roanoke Valley that have been neglected or grown-over. “The Wednesday Crew” as they call themselves, meets on Wednesdays to set-out in search of trails and paths that need attention.
Dr. Gordge himself believes in getting people outdoors to appreciate all the beauty of nature and the splendor of the Roanoke Valley. His tireless work with his group has uncovered some wonderful walking and hiking trails that were previously unusable. Dr. Gordge says one of his favorite parts about his work is seeing people use the pathways—even before he and the crew have even finished clearing the path.
For Dr. Gorge, the volunteer work he does is fun and a great way to exercise, but for the community, his efforts are incredibly important and selfless. Having greenways and places to move about in the outdoors is a priceless asset to the Roanoke Valley, brought to us by volunteers with big hearts, like Dr. Bill Gordge.
