Poncho Sanchez & Terence Blanchard

Conga legend Poncho Sanchez and trumpet star Terence Blanchard have created a hot new tribute to the legacy of the original Conga King, Chano Pozo, and his co-conspirator in Latin Jazz, Dizzy Gillespie. The duo put Afro-Cuban Jazz on the map with the standards, “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo,” their performance on George Russell’s seminal recording, Cubano Be! Cubano Bop!, and their historic concert at Carnegie Hall in 1947—all remarkable breakthrough accomplishments.  Don’t miss Blanchard and Sanchez, with the backing of the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band, as they unleash an unforgettable evening of high-energy Afro-Cuban jazz.

Terence Blanchard is one of the most influential jazz musicians and film score masters of his generation. With more than 29 albums to his credit, as a musician Blanchard is a multi-Grammy Award winner and nominee. In 2008, Blanchard won a Grammy for his CD, A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina). As a film composer, Blanchard has more than 50 scores to his credit and received a Golden Globe nomination for Spike Lee's 25th Hour.

A native of Laredo, conguero Poncho Sanchez has led one of the most influential Latin jazz ensembles for more than 20 years.  Sanchez won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for his recording Latin Soul.

Following the concert the 9^th annual dance party will commence in Fitpatrick Hall.  This 10^th anniversary celebration party will be one to remember.  Poncho will continue to say, “Poncho loves Roanoke!”  Take a nap before you come and be sure to bring your dancing shoes and latin moves for a festive evening of music, fun, and celebration of our beloved Shaftman Performance Hall.
