Roanoke Valley Reads (RVR) is a community-wide reading experience. It seeks to:
- encourage people to make reading a part of their daily lives
- foster a sense of community by bringing together people of different ages, races, religions and socio-economic levels
- promote tolerance and understanding of differing points of view
- emphasize the importance of literacy
RVR is a project of the Friends of the Roanoke County Library. It is based on “One Book, One Community,” an American Library Association program. Since 1998, when the Washington Center for the Book sponsored the first community-wide read, localities all over the United States have embraced the notion of civic unity through the reading of literature.
